“Advertising / Controversy - Remixed, the new double A-side single from genre crossing experimentalists Pink Punk, is to be released via Freeport Records / Universal Digital on 1st March 2010. Featuring the legendary voice of Bill Hicks, all proceeds from the download sale of ‘Advertising’ will be donated to The Bill Hicks Foundation for Wildlife Rehabilitation.”
‘Advertising’ This is a really unusual concept that Pink Punk has created and it is the most interesting I have come across in recent times. Spoken word projects have never struck a chord with me, but including a sampling of Bill Hick’s stand up set provides the perfect intro to this song. Centred around certain individuals dislike of advertising and marketing, Bill directs “By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself. Just a thought... but seriously though, if you are, do.” With the intro complete, the main vocal performance is provided by returning member of the Pink Punk crew, ‘Yap’ and his strong Irish accent comes through, which for reasons I can’t quite place, leaves me smiling. The guitars at times remind me of early Tool, so for that alone I'm impressed. What you get with this record is something different, unique and with a platform of great musicians to build from, Pink Punk has started to travel in a new direction from the rest. This is the aforementioned track for which purchases made will go towards the Bill Hicks Foundation.

‘Controversy’ is the second remix to feature on this single and with Pink Punk’s roots in electronica shining through; this is perhaps what you might typically expect of an artist like this. It does move through various genres during the tracks entirety, with a few more samples of spoken word, alongside a few brief moments of heavy guitar licks. In all honesty, this doesn’t excite me in the same way ‘Advertising’ did, because despite its various moods and attitudes, it feels too busy.
As a listener, I would personally spend more of my time focused on ‘Advertising’ and as its release and sales are for a good cause, it’s even more reason to turn attention towards it.
